What is Tableau?
- Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool used in the Business Intelligence Industry
- It helps in simplifying raw data into the very easily understandable format. Data analysis is very fast with Tableau and the visualizations created are in the form of dashboards and worksheets

Tableau Desktop
- Tableau Desktop is installed on a workstation or laptop
- Tableau Desktop has the most fully featured development environment and allows for data source creation
- Data sources and metadata can only be created in Tableau Desktop
- Tableau Desktop must be used for the majority of modifications to data sources
- New data sources can only be published from Tableau Desktop
- Tableau Desktop provides analytic capabilities not found in Tableau Server’s web authoring environment
- Dashboard actions can only be created in Tableau Desktop
Notes:
- Tableau is targeted for business professionals and business analytics, most of the operations in Tableau desktop is easy (Drag & drop) instead of coding as like PowerBI DAX or Pandas
- Tableau also has ADX (similar to PowerBI DAX) for advanced users
Tableau Server
- Tableau Server allows you to set up your own Tableau implementation
- Tableau Server, on the other hand, is installed on a Windows server and accessible to users via a browser
- Tableau Server has a web authoring mode similar to Tableau Desktop and also provides additional collaboration, security and scalability features not available in Tableau Desktop
- Once users have the permissions, they can create new workbooks from published data sources or modify existing workbooks
- Data source editing is limited in Tableau Server. You can only edit “connection” information
Tableau Online
Tableau Online is a web hosted cloud-based version of Tableau Server
Tableau Prep
- Tableau Public is a free service that lets anyone publish interactive data visualizations to the web. Visualizations that have been published to Tableau Public (“vizzes”) can be embedded into web pages and blogs, they can be shared via social media or email, and they can be made available for download to other users
- Tableau Prep is a personal data preparation tool that empowers the user with the ability to cleanse, aggregate, merge or otherwise prepare their data for analysis in Tableau.

Tableau Public is free for you to use, but all the data that you put on the site is free
