Concepts you should know
- ISP:
- The distributor of internet
- Example: so-net (Sony network communication), BiGlobe
- You can choose ISP when signing up for contract
- Owner of cable:
- the company that owns physical connection line i.e. optical fiber
- Example: NTT, FLETs
- Service provider:
- The carrier or mobile operator (or dedicated company) who will handle customer and manage monthly billing
- Example: NTT Docomo, Softbank, Asahi
Types of connections
- VDSL
- CATV
- Wimax
- Optical fiber
Notes
- The word ‘Hikari’ is used to indicate high speed for followings
- 100 Mbps over VDSL
- 1 Gbps+ over Optical fiber
- If you want Gbps connection then you have to mention ‘Hikari 1 Gbps’ or ‘Hikari 10 Gbps’
Packages
- NTT docomo
- 100 Mbps (VDSL, if the property you are living does not have optical fiber connection)
- 1 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- 10 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- KDDI au: same as docomo
- Softbank
- 100 Mbps (VDSL, if the property you are living does not have optical fiber connection)
- 1 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- 500 Mbps (Wimax)
- NURO (from so-net)
- 1 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- 2 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- 10 Gbps (Optical fiber)
- Asahi net
Applying for internet service
- Go to nearby store of any major carrier (mobile operator) store i.e. NTT docomo, KDDI au, Softbank etc.
- Apply for new contract
- Check if any campaign/discound is going on (some campaign/discound depends on ISP selection)
- In my case
- 2018: got 20,000 yen cashback from NTT docomo
- 2021: got 33,000 yen discound for new contract with Softbank (used that discount in Yodobashi to buy things)
- It might take some time to start the service
- They will mention a date on which their technician will go to your home if needed (technician will do the setup if needed)
- For VDSL, if connection and outlet are already in you house, then they might only send the router (just connect and it should work)
