Prerequisites
- Make sure that chromecast or chromecast enabled device (i.e. projector with Android TV) and PC are connected to the same network
- If you are using AV System, for example in my case Sony HT-X8500 soundbar, then setup should be as following:
- Connect AV system to PC using HDMI cable (HDMI input post should be used on AV System, not HDMI ARC/eACR)
- Connect monitor or projector on HDMI ARC/eACR port of AV System (AV System will extract audio and pass-through video on HDMI ARC/eACR port)
VLC
- Download and install VLC
- Make sure that your PC and chromecast are connected to the same network
- Play video (i.e. mkv or mp4 movie) with VLC
- Menu > Playback > Renderer > select your chromecast
Movies & TV app
- Play video (i.e. mkv or mp4 movie) with “Movies & TV” app
- Click “…” on the bottom right > Cast to device > select chromecast
Chrome browser
- Open empty tab
- Drop video file on chrome (in my test, only mp4 worked, for mkv chrome started downloading instead of playing)
- Right on video > Cast > select your chrome cast
Convert an MKV file to MP4 using VLC:
- Run “VLC media player”
- From main menu select “Media” > “Convert / Save”
- On “File” tab, click “Add” button
- Choose you MKV file
- Click “Convert/Save” button
- Select Profile: “Video – H
- Click on the icon button that has hint: “Edit selected profile”
