What is Universal Print connector?
- Printers that are not compatible with Universal Print cannot communicate with Universal Print service directly, and require a proxy client called “Universal Print Connector”
- Universal Print connector is a component that you can use to make a printer work with Universal Print
- Unless you have a printer that directly connects to Universal Print, you must use a connector
Why Universal Print connector needed
As of November, 2021, many printer are still not compatible with Universal Print
- The printer firmware needs to support the communication protocols that the Universal Print service uses
- Printers that don’t support the Universal Print protocols in their firmware require the Universal Print connector
- Various printer manufacturers plan to offer Universal Print–compatible printer in future
Printers that support the Universal Print protocols in their firmware don’t require the Universal Print connector (Known as Universal Print compatible printers)
Installing Connector

- Connector can be installed in:
- Client Device (i.e. On-premise Windows PC)
- Azure VM (mentioned that the VM is connected to on-premise network via VPN or ExpressRoute)
