Backup modes
- Periodic backup mode
- Continuous backup mode (As of March 2021, currently in public preview)
※Existing CosmosDB can not be switched to “Continuous backup mode”
Backup
- Periodic backup mode
- Default backup mode for all existing accounts
- Backup is taken at a periodic interval (and the data is restored by creating a request with the support team)
- Maximum retention period extends to a month
- Minimum backup interval can be one hour

- Continuous backup mode
- This mode can be selected while creating Cosmos DB account
- Allows you to do restore to any point of time within the last 30 days

When using MongoDB API

Restore
- Periodic backup mode : requires creating a request with the support team to restore
- Continuous backup mode : allows self-service restore via Azure portal
